As the center of culture covering literature and films, young and poor artists gathered around Euljiro & Chungmuro. Traces of poor artists are called HipJiro, and people are gathering around these traces. Sewoon Shopping Center planned to be demolished now became a tourist attration where young people visit for unique charms. The course with old building and alley attract people with stories of Euljiro.
Yesultong is an integrated cultural space recreating into the culture and art space by combining the historic and cultural background in the abandoned unused space in the city . Yesultong goes beyond space recreation and it settled down as a place where people and culture are in harmony through convergence of performing arts and academy. Street Museum is one of the projects by Yesultong and the art museum continuing from Pil-dong to Namsangol Hanok village exhibits 8 pieces including painting, sculpture, and installation art.
Euljiro Street settled down as the first beer street after starting from a liquor wholesale store warehouse selling beer in a cheap price. Euljiro Gobaengi Street started from selling seaseoned golbaengi(freshwater snail) at small stores between Euljiro 3-Ga Station and Jungbu Police Station. This street is famous for cheap price of nogari(dried young pollack), and picnic tables and crowd filling up the street at night time.
Chun Tae-il Memorial Hall opened in 2019 and the space is made for Chun Tae-il who stands in the center of labor history in Korea. Chun experienced poor labor environment at a sewing factory in Pyeonghwa Market around 1960s. He died at the early age of 22 1970 during his resistance claiming 'Keep Labor Standards Act' and ' We are not a machine.' Chun Tae-il Memorial Hall is a place for learning of labor through various exhibitions and performance programs.
Sewoon Shopping Center is the first residential-commercial facility in Korea and it enjoyed great fame with large-scale shopping districts and 17-story premium apartment when it was first built. While Sewoon Shopping Center was Mecca of electronics in Korea, it faced a period of decline due to change in distribution structure. Starting from 1990s, some suggested on demolishing Sewoon Shopping Center . Then, Seoul publicy announced on retention of Sewoon Shopping Center in 2014 and Seoul is currently promting urban regeneration project. Remake Sewoon Project is stimulating the deserted place by improving pedestrian environment arranging culture complex facility, and creating space for start-up, creation, and development.
